Chapter Eight

Arriving at the store, Kayla was so eager, she tripped going through the door but managed to catch herself. Glancing over her shoulder at him with slightly pink cheeks, she sheepishly admitted, “I didn’t know there was a step there.”

Amused, Darius settled his hand on her lower back just in case. “There isn’t.”

Her face screwed up adorably. “Damn ghosts.”

Chuckling, Darius looked around. The shop had to be some sort of pop-up store, even if it looked like a permanent business from the outside. Inside, the place was charming, he’d give them that. Possibly a converted home, or a structure built to look like one, each room was decorated with Christmas cheer, complete with full-sized Christmas trees, and devoted to a particular color scheme. But no business, in his opinion, could be sustainable when their entire brand revolved around a holiday that happened one day a year. Curious as to their business model, he decided he’d have to be sure to speak to the manager before he left, ascertain if this was simply one branch of a much larger tree.

Kayla, meanwhile, reminded him of a kid in a candy store, her face rapturous with delight as she bounced eagerly on her toes, and gazed around with sparkling eyes. “Oh, I love it,” she gushed. Turning to him, her joined hands tucked adorably under her chin, she asked, “What color should we do?”

Darius had no idea, but he loved the sight of unadulterated pleasure that was clearly written on her face. This was definitely Kayla’s forte, not his, but he didn’t want to do anything that might spoil this moment for her. “Er, red?” Red was a nice traditional Christmas color, so he figured he couldn’t go wrong with that choice.

He must have chosen well since Kayla gave another little bounce, grabbed his hand, and pulled him toward a room that practically glowed with the color.

“What do you think?” she asked, her excitement plain to see as she looked up at him.

Red and gold glass balls, spirals, icicles, all glittering under an abundance of tiny lights on the tree she’d stopped in front of. He had to admit it was pretty, but again, not his area of expertise. On a whim, he leaned down and kissed the top of her head. “You’re the Christmas aficionado, get whatever you think we’ll need.”

His statement was met with a squeal of delight and they’d soon had to enlist the assistance of a clerk as boxes of red and gold glass ornaments were chosen, what must have been thousands of tiny lights, tinsel, bows, and garlands. An elaborate swath of red and gold swirled fabric for a tree skirt. A fancy Santa Claus in red velvet robes trimmed with white fur and embroidered poinsettias in glittering red and gold thread. An intricately crafted table display piece of children ice skating on a frozen pond with frosted glass snowmen looking on from the snowy banks. Kayla was enthralled with it all, buzzing around like a happy little bee, and Darius was enthralled by her.
